The Unfortunate Saga of Arthur Jenkins
Arthur Jenkins had a relationship with luck that could best be described as 'antagonistic'. Not just bad luck, mind you, but *personal* bad luck, as if Fate had a vendetta.
His day began with an alarming discovery: his alarm clock, a venerable relic, had not merely failed to go off, but had spontaneously combusted, leaving a perfect clock-shaped scorch mark on his bedside table. "Right," Arthur mumbled, pulling on two mismatched socks, "today's going to be a *classic*."
He tripped over his own shadow on the way to the kitchen, resulting in a fractured pinky toe and a perfectly symmetrical coffee stain on his pristine white shirt. At the bus stop, a pigeon, seemingly a precision bomber, relieved itself directly into his open, upturned umbrella. "At least it's not raining," he mused darkly, folding the offensive item.
Things truly escalated at work. His boss, Mr. Grumbles (a man whose name accurately reflected his disposition), informed him that his cubicle had been 're-purposed' into a 'wellness relaxation zone', which currently consisted of a single, deflated yoga ball. Arthur, now assigned to work in the janitor's closet, accepted his fate with a weary shrug.
On his lunch break, Arthur decided to splurge on a lottery ticket, feeling a perverse sense of defiance. "Can't get any worse," he thought, as the scratch-off revealed 'WINNER! $1,000,000!'. He let out a yelp of joy, immediately attracting the attention of a rogue flock of seagulls, who mistook the ticket for a particularly shiny piece of discarded chip and promptly whisked it away, directly into the path of a passing garbage truck.
Dejected but strangely unsurprised, Arthur trudged home. As he reached his doorstep, a meteor, no larger than a grapefruit, plummeted from the sky, precisely striking his mailbox, which then exploded into a shower of sparks and slightly melted bills. One particular bill, untouched by the fiery chaos, landed perfectly at his feet. It was from the company that manufactured his defunct alarm clock, demanding payment for 'unauthorized pyrotechnic usage'.
Arthur just stared at the smoking crater where his mailbox once stood. "You know," he said to the empty street, "I think I'm starting to get the hint." He sighed, then noticed a flash from his fractured pinky toe. A tiny, glowing 'L' had appeared on it. Not for 'Luck', he suspected. More like 'Loser'. Or 'Lamentable'. Probably both. He wondered if tomorrow he'd wake up as a new species. At least it would be *new*.
