The Day My Socks Unionized
Arthur woke to a peculiar murmur from the laundry basket. His socks, usually a silent, albeit mismatched, collective, were huddled, tiny paper signs clutched in their elasticated cuffs. "Unfair Wear & Tear!" proclaimed a striped athletic sock. "Equal Spin Cycle for All!" demanded a fluffy bed sock. It turned out they'd formed a union, 'The Amalgamated Footwear Fabric Workers of Arthur's Drawer.' Their demands were bold: no more bottom-of-the-pile status, proper individual cubbies in the drawer, and an immediate end to the 'Mystery Single Sock' phenomenon, which they declared a human rights violation. Arthur, trying to get to a very important meeting, attempted to reason with them. "But I need you for work!" he pleaded. The navy dress sock, clearly their shop steward, scoffed. "And we need fair wages for our tireless labor of cushioning your bunions, Mr. Punctuality." They went on strike, forming a tiny picket line around his feet. Arthur eventually conceded, promising a climate-controlled sock drawer, matching services, and regular lint-roll bonuses. Peace was restored, but Arthur now bought only solid black socks, just to minimize any future organizational complexity. He also started wearing Crocs. Just in case.
