The Bureaucracy of Prophecy: A Chosen One's Onboarding Nightmare
Barry "Bartholomew" Bumble had always imagined his destiny, if it ever arrived, would involve a dramatic clash of steel, perhaps a fiery dragon, and definitely a flowing cape. Instead, it began with a laminated card, stapled to his fridge next to a grocery list. "Congratulations, Barry! You've been pre-selected for the 'Hero of the Realm' initiative! Please call your local Prophecy Processing Unit to schedule your mandatory orientation session. Failure to comply may result in temporal displacement or a late fee."
Barry sighed. He’d ignored the first three emails. This was getting serious.
He called the number. After navigating an endless automated menu ("Press 1 for Dragon Slaying, 2 for Lich Lord Negotiations, 3 for Existential Dread Support..."), he finally reached a chipper voice. "Thank you for calling Destiny & Co., where your fate is our priority! You're speaking with Brenda from Onboarding. How may I direct your Heroic Journey today?"
Brenda informed Barry that his "quest" was essentially a 9-to-5 position, with benefits (after a three-month probationary period, no heroic injuries covered during that time). His primary objective: to "synergize cross-factional relations" and "optimize resource allocation" across the Seven Kingdoms. The "Dark Lord Kael'thas" was merely a "legacy system disruptor" who'd failed his performance review and was now holding the Realm's critical infrastructure (a giant crystal that powered the Wi-Fi) hostage.
His legendary sword, 'Blade of Lumina,' turned out to be a multi-tool from a discount hardware store, primarily useful for opening stubborn packaging and tightening loose screws on a catapult. His 'Fabled Steed' was a shared electric scooter with a faulty kickstand.
The "climax" arrived when Barry confronted Kael'thas, not in a cavern of shadow, but in the Realm's central server room, which smelled faintly of stale coffee and desperation. Kael'thas, a man in a stained tunic and Crocs, just wanted his pension plan reinstated.
"You understand, Barry," Kael'thas grumbled, "they cut my dental! My. Dental!"
Barry, armed with a customer feedback form and a laminated 'Conflict Resolution Flowchart,' calmly explained the new tiered benefits system and offered Kael'thas a severance package that included a lifetime supply of generic aspirin and a voucher for a single free therapy session with a gnome psychologist.
Kael'thas, utterly deflated, relinquished control of the crystal. The Wi-Fi flickered back on.
Barry returned to his mundane life, now with a slightly better understanding of pivot tables and the knowledge that true heroism often involved more paperwork than actual swordplay. He even got a promotion: "Senior Heroic Associate, Level 2," which came with a small raise and the option to expense ergonomic gauntlets. His cape was still pending approval from procurement.
