The Banana Barcode Brouhaha
It all started with a single banana. A seemingly innocent, yellow, potassium-rich curved fruit. I just needed one. One. My mission: a quick dash into the supermarket, grab the banana, conquer the self-checkout, and return to my sofa, victorious.
Oh, how naive I was.
The self-checkout machine, 'Unit 7: Zenith of Efficiency,' greeted me with a robotic cheerfulness that immediately put me on edge. I scanned the banana. Nothing. I tried again. 'ITEM NOT RECOGNIZED. PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN BAGGING AREA.' I placed the banana in the bagging area. The machine hummed, then shrieked, 'UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA!'
I removed the banana. 'PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN BAGGING AREA.'
I put it back. 'UNEXPECTED ITEM!'
We were in a loop. A very yellow, slightly bruised, existential loop. I tried manually entering the code. The screen offered 'Granny Smith Apple,' 'Organic Cucumber,' 'Artisan Sourdough.' No banana. I scrolled frantically, sweat beading on my brow. My one banana, innocent until minutes ago, now felt like a sentient spy device, mocking my technological ineptitude.
Finally, I spotted 'Fruit - Yellow, Curved.' Close enough! I selected it. The machine triumphantly announced, 'PRICE: £7.99 for 1kg of Mangos!'
A single mango-priced banana. My spirit crumbled. Just then, a supermarket assistant, a teenager whose expression suggested he’d seen things that would haunt a lesser man, ambled over. He pressed a few buttons, squinted at the banana, typed something, and boom – 19p.
'It's a banana,' he said, stating the obvious with the gravitas of a Zen master imparting ancient wisdom.
'I know!' I wanted to shout. 'But your machine thinks it's a portal to another dimension filled with suspiciously cheap mangoes!'
I paid, grabbed my banana, and fled. Next time, I'm just going to steal a banana. Kidding. Mostly.
