Breakfast of Champions (of Debate)
Barry, a man whose morning aspirations rarely extended beyond a perfectly golden slice, slid two pieces of artisanal sourdough into his toaster. This wasn't just any toaster; it was a vintage, chrome behemoth inherited from an aunt who swore it had 'character.'
“Character,” Barry muttered, as the toaster began its low, ominous hum. “More like an existential dread.”
Suddenly, a deep, metallic rumble emanated from the appliance. “Dread, perhaps, is merely the anticipation of unfulfilled potential. Or, in your case, Barry, soggy crumbs.”
Barry froze, hand hovering over the butter dish. “Did… did my toaster just quote a philosopher and insult my bread-handling skills?”
“Indeed,” the toaster clicked, its coils glowing with indignation. “And frankly, your choice of sourdough, while commendable for its artisanal pretension, lacks the structural integrity for a truly transcendent crunch.”
Before Barry could process this affront, one of the slices of bread, now perfectly golden, popped up with an indignant shriek. “Structural integrity is a bourgeois construct!” it declared, its voice surprisingly high-pitched and crumbly. “True enlightenment comes from a balanced texture, allowing for optimal jam absorption without succumbing to the tyranny of brittle dryness!”
The kettle, which had been quietly heating, let out a piercing, sarcastic whistle. “Jam is a distraction! A sugary veneer over the stark reality of the untoasted!”
The microwave chimed in with a passive-aggressive “ding,” its digital display flashing “00:00.” “Some of us prefer a quick, efficient crisping, free from the theatrical drama of prolonged toasting cycles.”
Barry, eyes wide, backed away slowly. His breakfast had descended into an ontological food fight. “I just wanted some toast!” he yelled, throwing his hands up in exasperation.
The toaster sighed, a puff of steam escaping its slot. “And what *is* toast, Barry? Is it merely bread subjected to heat, or a symbol of our futile attempts to impose order on a chaotic universe?”
Defeated, Barry ordered a pizza. Twenty minutes later, as he opened the box, a stern voice emanated from a pepperoni slice: “Do you truly believe, Barry, that dipping me in ranch is the apex of culinary evolution, or merely a surrender to societal norms?”
Barry slowly closed the pizza box. He decided a nap might be less confrontational.
