The Alibi of the Arch-Lich: A Dirk Dastardly P.I. Mystery
Dirk Dastardly, Private Investigator, adjusted his fedora, which felt decidedly out of place atop his head in the bustling marketplace of Eldoria. Dragons circled overhead, a minor inconvenience, and a bard was wailing a ballad about a lost love and a particularly nasty case of goblin-pox. Dirk, however, was focused on something far more pressing: the missing 'Orb of Infinite Whatevers'.
His current suspect, Bartholomew 'Barty' Grimfang, Arch-Lich of the Necrotic Spire, sat across from him. Barty, a skeletal figure draped in shadowy robes, tapped a bony finger on the obsidian table. "As I've stated, Detective Dastardly," Barty rasped, his voice echoing with the whispers of a thousand tormented souls, "I was, at the precise moment of the Orb's disappearance, engaged in a mandatory quarterly review of my existential dread projections. My calendar, filed with the Department of Undead Affairs, is quite clear on this."
Dirk scribbled in his notepad. "And do you have any witnesses to corroborate this 'existential dread projection review'?"
Barty paused. "Witnesses? My dear Dastardly, one reviews existential dread in solitude. It's rather the point, isn't it? Though my spectral minions did bring me a soothing cup of ectoplasmic Earl Grey around that time. They are quite reliable."
Dirk sighed. This was always the problem with Eldoria. No one understood a good alibi. "Right. And this 'ectoplasmic Earl Grey', was it served in, say, a goblet that might retain fingerprints?"
Barty emitted a sound that might have been a chuckle, if liches still had lungs. "Fingerprints? Detective, I haven't had digits with epidermal ridges since the Great Unpleasantness of the Sixth Age. I'm afraid my touch leaves only a lingering chill and the faint scent of grave-dust."
A goblin delivery boy, struggling with a crate labeled "Dragon Chow (Extra Spicy)", jostled past, nearly knocking over Dirk's carefully arranged evidence photos – mostly blurry shots of the Orb's last known location. Dirk muttered under his breath about proper crime scene protocols.
His next interview was with Elara Whisperwind, an elven sorceress accused of 'chronal displacement' – basically, time-traveling to cheat at the annual Eldoria Bake-Off. She'd claimed to be "transcending the earthly plane" at the time of the Orb's disappearance. Dirk had patiently explained that "transcending" wasn't a recognized form of alibi in the Eldorian legal system, which, he had to admit, still hadn't quite grasped 'due process' either.
The Orb was eventually found, not by Dirk's meticulous detective work, but by a bumbling squire who tripped over it while chasing a runaway unicorn. It had apparently rolled off its pedestal and under a particularly dusty dragon-hoard display, remaining unnoticed for weeks.
Dirk Dastardly closed the case, filing a report detailing the "gross negligence of artifact placement" and "substandard illumination in high-value asset storage zones." He recommended mandatory "Orb-Tethering Protocols" and a stricter policy on magical artifact liability. His findings were promptly ignored by the Eldorian High Council, who were too busy debating the proper ratio of glitter to grim in their next epic prophecy. Dirk just shook his head, lit a magically self-lighting cigarette, and muttered, "Another day, another utterly illogical mystery solved...ish."
