Alexa, Dim the Existential Dread (and the Lights)
Dave, a man whose tech-savvy peaked with VCR programming, stood triumphantly before his new smart speaker. "Tonight," he declared to his wife, Sarah, and their two giggling children, Leo and Mia, "we enter the 21st century. No more fumbling with switches!" His mission: dim the living room lights for family movie night.
"Alexa," Dave commanded, puffing out his chest, "dim the lounge lights."
"Playing 'Dim All the Lights' by Donna Summer," Alexa chirped, flooding the room with disco beats. The kids immediately started flailing.
"No, Alexa! Stop! Not a song! The *lights*! Make them *less bright*!" Dave shouted, his face reddening.
"Searching for 'Lights Make Them Less Bright' on Spotify," Alexa responded helpfully.
Sarah stifled a laugh. "Just say 'lower brightness', honey."
Dave glared at the sleek cylinder. "Alexa, lower the living room brightness, please, with a polite tone."
"Setting brightness to 100%. Enjoy the disco party!" Alexa announced, as the lights began to strobe like a forgotten rave. Mia shrieked with delight, Leo pretended to be a DJ.
"Alexa, *stop*! Turn off the disco! Turn off *everything*!" Dave yelled, throwing his hands up.
"Confirming shutdown of all smart devices. Goodbye," Alexa replied, plunging the house into complete, eerie silence and darkness. Not even the fridge hummed.
The kids stopped dancing. Sarah let out a long sigh. Dave fumbled for his phone, its flashlight beam finally cutting through the gloom. "Stupid machine," he mumbled.
Sarah, calm as ever, walked to the wall and flicked a forgotten switch. The single overhead light blinked on, bathing them in a familiar, steady glow. "Maybe we just needed a break from the 21st century," she offered, patting Dave's shoulder. "And perhaps Alexa needs a break from your commanding tone." The kids, no longer blinded by science, burst into fresh gales of laughter.
