A Rather Unremarkable Tuesday
Arthur Pumble, a man whose life ambition was to ensure the office stationery cupboard never ran out of paperclips, considered Tuesdays to be the zenith of predictability. His desk, a fortress of neatly stacked invoices, hummed with the quiet efficiency of a man entirely comfortable with the mundane.
This particular Tuesday, however, presented a minor logistical anomaly. At precisely 10:32 AM, a delivery truck, painted a shade of puce so violent it almost registered as a health hazard, deposited a crate. The crate, approximately the size of a small refrigerator, bore a label: "Urgent: Live Specimen. Handle with Utmost Discretion and a Minimum of 10 Feet." Below this, in smaller script: "Re: Project Chimera – Do Not Feed the Subject Unless Absolutely Necessary and Only With Pre-Approved Alfalfa Pellets."
Arthur, after cross-referencing the internal delivery manifest with the external label (finding no match), produced his "Non-Standard Parcel Procedure, Section C, Sub-Section 7b: Unidentified Bio-Hazardous/Exotic Shipments." He noted, without visible perturbation, the faint, rhythmic thumping emanating from within the crate. "Evidently," he murmured to his empty mug of lukewarm Earl Grey, "the discretion requested is rather compromised by the internal acoustics."
He then meticulously completed a "Logistical Oversight Report, Form LOR-4," detailing the crate's dimensions, the "unfortunate hue" of the delivery vehicle, and the "audible internal agitation, possibly biological in origin, consistent with the weight and 'live specimen' designation." He also appended a query regarding the appropriate disposal of "non-standard biological waste" should the alfalfa pellets prove insufficient, or indeed, nonexistent within the company's approved vendor list.
Later that afternoon, a frantic email from HR circulated, reminding staff that "personal projects involving large, potentially predatory fauna are strictly prohibited on company grounds." Arthur merely added a note to his LOR-4: "HR's belated clarification implies a prior incident. Further investigation into 'Project Chimera's' internal designation code may be warranted." The crate continued its rhythmic thumping. Arthur returned to auditing the paperclip inventory. It was, after all, still Tuesday.
