A Pun-ishing Investigation
Detective "Hard-Boiled" Harry trudged into "The Daily Grind," a coffee shop notorious for its barista's verbal gymnastics. "What can I *brew* for you, detective?" chirped Fiona, wiping down the counter. "Just the facts, Fiona. I'm investigating the theft of the town's prized antique tea set. Any leads?"
Fiona leaned in. "Well, Mr. Crumb, the baker, was *kneading* some dough around the time of the incident. He mentioned he saw someone *loafing* about suspiciously near the mansion."
Harry groaned. He then visited Mr. Crumb. "Mr. Crumb, did you see anything unusual last night?"
"Unusual?" the baker huffed, flour dusting his apron. "Only that the butler looked a bit *scone*-faced when he told me he was *crust*-fallen about the missing set. I told him not to *butter* me up, I just want the truth!"
Next, Harry spoke to Mrs. Green, the town's award-winning gardener. "Mrs. Green, any peculiar sightings near the mansion's hedge maze?"
"Well, I *mustard* you, Detective," she said, deadpanning, "I did see the butler, Reginald, *pollen* around the rose bushes. He seemed quite *rooted* to the spot, looking rather *seed-y*."
Harry felt his eye twitch. "Reginald, the butler, you say?"
He found Reginald polishing silverware, looking impeccable. "Detective," Reginald began, "I'm quite *set* on finding the culprit. This whole affair has been a real *spoon*-ful of trouble. I'm sure it wasn't me, I'm simply a man of *tea* and sophistication."
Harry, finally piecing it together, smacked his forehead. "You're telling me you saw Reginald *pollen* around the roses, and Mr. Crumb saw him *loafing*? And Reginald is 'a man of *tea* and sophistication' who is 'set on finding the culprit' of a missing 'tea set?' He's been *buttering* everyone up!"
"Aha!" Harry declared, pointing at Reginald. "You took the tea set! You were simply *urn-ing* for a promotion, weren't you?"
Reginald sighed, defeated. "You got me, Detective. I suppose I should *spill the beans*."
Harry just shook his head. "And I thought *my* job was *pun-ishing*."
